If we have two lenses for an SLR, and they both perform best at the same aperture, then what's it matter if one of them is faster than the other? Well, when you're peering through your lens to compose your fantastic image, wouldn't you rather have a brighter image? Even if you always stop down to f8, I'd choose the faster lens for the brighter image. I learned this the expensive way. I bought a slower, variable aperture zoom for an SLR many years ago. 4.0-5.6 or something like that. The viewfinder was darker than my 2.8 lenses. Dark enough for me to sell that practically new zoom at a loss and save up 'til I could afford a faster zoom. I don't own any SLR lens slower than a 2.8 now. For a rangefinder, no big deal. But for an SLR, it can be a big deal. Eric - -- To unsubscribe, see http://mejac.palo-alto.ca.us/leica-users/unsub.html
