G'day Peter,

I suppose there isn't any simple answer to your question other than, simply
turn it off, no matter what you may think about how much drain occurs or
not. I suppose if you were involved in the designing of the gear then your
opinion would certainly count.

However, like many of us Leica users, rarely are we consulted by the elves
of Solms on "what happens in the real world" of hard use and knocking about
when designing power packs, lenshoods or whatever.

The power packs in my R8s seem to last forever and I work them hard like a
good woman, but when not in use they are turned off. When you're ready to
go, press the button and they're ready for action. Both! ;-)
