I think Smith used a variety of cameras and formats on the Pittsburgh
project. I've seen a picture of him working with two large format cameras
on the project. Apparently, Leicas were among the 35mm cameras since
Hughes, his biographer, notes that when Smith's car was broken into and
cameras and film were stolen, Smith "bought Leica M3s to replace his old
IIIcs and IIIfs." He also says that within a couple of days, "two of Gene's
Leicas turned up in an East Libery pawn shop" and that Smith paid $40. to
buy them back.
