Hi Simon,
If one doesn't think nor worry about shooting in the middle of the action
and just does it, 99% of the time it works out fine just hand holding the
camera. Certainly the short lenses you're referring to.

Because if you're in the middle of the action and there's a lot of pushing,
shoving and leaning on by other photogs, a stabilizing lens isn't going to
compensate for that. Besides you just push, lean and shove back and find out
everyone goes home as happy as a cat in clean litter with their pictures
intact.;-)
