It has everything to do with being able to release the shutter with a simple squeeze of your hand. No finger poking down inside a raised rim. You don't use the end of your finger. You use the middle of your finger or thumb (between joints) to gently squeeze the release. It becomes second nature. It's the only way to make sharp photographs in available darkness at v-e-r-y slow shutter speeds. Or any other time using very slow speeds. Once seeing how easy it is to quietly release the shutter via soft release, one always carries spares in case the one in use gets lost. It is the kind of thing that makes Leica M photography a real joy. Don't leave home without it.
