There must be more to it than that. Before me sits a book of WES's work titled W. Eugene Smith Photographs 1934-1975 and published in 1998. Tucked away in the back of the book are these comments: "Smith's original silver gelatin prints from the CCP archive are the source for many of these images. Re- production prints were carefully made from copy neg- atives by their staff." "A third group of images come from recent prints made by CCP staff from [Smith's] original negatives. Many of these were marked on contact sheets by Smith but were never printed. All pictures in this category are made 'straight' without the presumption of matching Smith's printing techniques and are full images with- out cropping.
