It was created at a time when alt.fan groups were used to denigrate people, not praise them. I was the original creator of the alt.* mechanism, and I tried to steer it perhaps a little bit longer than I should have. You will note that there is also (on those few servers that carry such groups) an alt.sex.pederasts.brian_reid, created five years ago by a nut-case in Boulder, Colorado who thought that would annoy me.
