I have cleaned the mirror and lens on mine many times with no trouble at all.
And removing the dust makes a huge difference in the quality of scans.  I
generally brush any dust off very gently with a Q-tip from the mirror; the lens
rarely collects much dust, but the mirror rapidly becomes thick with it.  On
rare occasions, I've moistened the Q-tip with a bit of Kodak lens cleaner as
well, but that usually isn't necessary.
