It really is true that some lenses are more or less suited to certain applications. If you want razor-sharp for one image, you go with razor-sharp; if you want a more luminous look, you might choose an older lens, a soft-focus lens or a even a softar-style filter. Very sharp, contrasty lenses are not always the perfect choice. Then again, I doubt you've spent much time in a pro studio.
