I am sure it has been said before in this discussion, but in case it hasn't
here goes - try Vuescan at www.hamrick.com which has image clean-up which
works fine with b&w films.

Digital ice--as it is most popular implemented today--will not work with
silver halide film.  Regardless of scanner settings.  Silver halide film
doesn't let the infrared beam pass through like chromagenic film.  Use
Ilford XP2, and it should be fine.  It's a function of the film itself and
not the color settings.
