Subject: [Leica] network storms

There's been the Internet equivalent of a hurricane this week, supposedly caused by a fire in a tunnel in Baltimore that destroyed thousands of strands of fiber optic cable. Like every other mail server around, mejac.palo-alto.ca.us has been overwhelmed by it. The symptoms are that you will see avalanches of several-day-old mail. I haven't yet figured out whether I can do anything about it, and my options are limited because I'm on a dialup thousands of miles from my computers. But I'll be home tomorrow, in case the problem is persistent and in case there is something I can do about it.

This morning there were 35,000 undelivered mail messages waiting on mejac for delivery. They were undelivered because it had not been possible to deliver them earlier.
