We don't need to contest one another. I hear Ted clearly saying
that, for him, catching the action and emotion clearly stand out
as number one. Seeing some of his work, I'd guess that
positioning himself, with respect to the light, for the best
rendering, would run a close second. And then if the out of focus
areas look good - hey great. And if they don't, neither he nor
his periodical publishers, will lose a wink of sleep over it.
He's making uncontestable, personal statements, regarding his
work and methodology.

Others on the list choose to approach the image from a "gorgeous
bokeh" position. Perhaps they're concentrating on flowers or
falcons, rather than prime ministers sliding down banisters, or
surgeons in operating rooms. It doesn't translate into a contest,
as if one holds a truth that needs defending at sunrise and
twenty pases with the offended's choice of weapons - although we
could meet there and then and at the count of ten turn and fire
our M6's at one another and then compare your 50 cron with the
sun at your back to my 50 lux with sun in my face.
