IRC = Internet Relay Chat, a standard for chatting in real time over the
Internet by sending text messages back and forth to each other. A number of
free and nearly-free IRC programs are available.

ICQ = A proprietary and much more elaborate form of chat that is basically
similar to IRC. I believe there is only one client available for ICQ.

I've used IRC (although I don't have anyone to chat to in real time, really, so
not often), but I've abandoned ICQ because there are too many security issues
that I'd prefer not to worry about.

More generally, I find that real-time chat gets old really quick, like the
telephone. I prefer to read and respond to messages at my leisure, not whenever
the PC or the phone rings.
