How so? I and I believe many others consider those other top-end SLR
camera too big also.

The reason some of us consider the R8 too big and others consider it
just right is most likely related to hand size. I have small hands and
to me holding an R8 makes me feel like I am stretching them all the time
because it is so thick. Another camera I recently held that gave me the
same sensation is the Contax N1. Holding it was really quite
uncomfortable.

Other than the size I think the R8 is a wonderful piece of kit. It's
just not one I could comfortably use. Pity (though probably lucky for my
bank account!).
