Yes they can be used, as long as they can be reasonably scale 
focussed. I use a Fish-eye-Takumar on my M's with a door-viewer 
finder and a #22232 adapter. Someone could make you an equivalent 
adapter cheaper than the real thing at this point. The adapter is 
worth way more than the lens by now.
