The battery cover completes the circuit between the body and the negative side of the "outer" battery. I just left the battery cover off and completed the circuit with my ammeter. The terminals in question are visible only with the batteries removed. They are two very small "pin" sized contacts in the bottom of the battery compartment well. They are partially hidden by the positive spring contact.
