I've tried trackballs and don't like them, either.  But what I do like is a
trackball mouse.  Logitech TrackMan Marble.  (Actually, the current one I'm
using is a Marble+, meaning it has a scrolling wheel on the middle button.)
There's a mini trackball that you control with your thumb.  I find it
accurate and relaxing.  It would be extremely difficult to use left-handed,
though.  It is contoured for right-hand use.
