You may notice that the winner of the last two consecutive Tours de France 
did it on made-in-USA Trek frames equipped with Shimano Dura-Ace 
components. And have you ever TRIED getting parts for Campy stuff in (say) 
Moab, UT? Good luck!

It's like cameras: good equipment does help, but the user's creativity and 
strengths make it happen!

(If you're going for maximum expense, why not get a Merlin or Lightspeed 
anyway? Buy the custom-made frames, of course...)
