Hi Tony

I have an SL MOT, the SL MOT was introduced in 1972 but mine has a
serial number dating it to 1970! I made some enquiries and recieved
the following explanation from Leica UK, it might also explain the
serial number anomaly on your SL, I dont know what the asterisk means,
maybe it was fitted with a new baseplate at some stage and the
asterisk indicates a new serial number?

>>>>>>>>>>>>>
The s/n 1278377 was allocated to a batch of Leicaflex SL's in 1970. As
was
often the practice this number (not being used in that batch) would
have
been been carried over to be used in a later production run, ie -
Leicaflex SL MOT. We have no details of any protypes, and
modification to
the origonal SL is unlikely. Should you require clarification please
phone
me on 01908 666663
