Thanks for the input, Lucien.  Somebody on the list did suggested using
the now discontinued STA-1.  Although I have not tried it myself, I feel
it may be a bit slim for supporting the Apo-Elmarit-R 180/2.8.  With a
little re-engineering I now use my existing Canon EF tripod mount
(designed originally for the Canon EF200/2.8L) with good result.
