Just my .02 cents. I have no use for TTL flash, the recycle time is to slow.
I always use Automatic setting and the reason is I shoot a lot of corporate
events, receptions, etc, with Nikon F3HP (which has the TTL feature). It
drives me nuts waiting for the recycle. I used to use the monster Metz (the
one with 6AA's in handle) which was fine, but now the best flash I have ever
used is the Nikon SB28. love the zoom feature from 20mm to 85mm. BUT the
really BIG feature for me is with both flashes, set on Automatic, I can fire
off 3 36 exp. rolls continously on motor drive with no interuption in flash.
Using 'Automatic' instead of TTL for me is a no-brainer.

Also I mount the SB28 on a L bracket and the camera balance is perfect.
