I think that the effective ASA/ISO of B&W films depends on the type of meter
(center biased, averaging, spot, etc.) and what is metered (shadows, middle
tones) as well as the effective shutter speed of the camera. Modern shutters
are fairly accurate but in many cases for mechanical shutters a 1/500sec is
more like 1/300 or more.
ISO 320-400 is fine if metering the shadows. 250 for averaging readings. It
is all relative, one's setting is not necessarily right for others. What
works is experimentation and consistency in metering - to arrive at the
optimal individual ASA/ISO.
