The latest version of Vuescan _does_ have preview (and you can crop from the
preview window).

Thanks for your comments. It makes sense to wait with a major electronics
purchase until the initial bugs have been ironed out, although in the case
of
software on can presumably always download the latest version (and drivers)
from
the vendor's web site. I have tried Vuescan in the past but the lack of
preview
makes it a no-go for me.
