Please, someone tell me why anyone who would own one of these jewels would 
do this:

Pardon the image...it was a quick job, but it is only 30k.

Also, if anyone knows what this is in the bottom plate, I would love to 
know...I can't find anything like it in my manuals or other images online. 
(looks like something added aftermarket too.)

It protrudes from the base about 2mm and doesn't allow the camera to sit 
flat on a level surface. I could have it pluged with some flat rubber 
gasket, but want to know if it serves a purpose first.
