Subject: [Leica] what to do with those PAWs

Heya Luggers!

A propos of the recent thread on archival quality prints and selling to the
general public, there's an article in today's NYTimes on what how and why
the general public buys "art" for itself.

http://www.nytimes.com/2001/03/08/living/08WALL.html?pagewanted=all

An excerpt:

"Polly Clive, a television director in Boston ... bought a framed
black-and-white photograph of peonies by Tom Baril, and she bought it to go
with her walls.

"Having just painted the flat yellow, I was struck by how fantastic black
and white would look," she said.

Ms. Clive also enjoyed the exclusivity of a limited edition. She got No. 1
out of 2,500.

"Obviously 2,500 is a very large number," Ms. Clive said, "but it makes you
feel like you have something that not everyone chose, or could get."

But, at $450, framed, is it art? Or just pretty? Will it mature in art
market terms?"

My guess is that it will mature in market terms about as much as a Beenie
Baby. Better hope it doesn't fade much.

xoxo,
Erminia
