Leica has great skills in optical and traditional mechanical design. But
Leica would not be able to make R lenses in other mounts without
technical support, or at least some licensing agreement, from Nikon,
Canon. These already have to compete with the cheap third party lenses.
Now imagine if in addition they had to compete in the up-market range.
