Peter,

Can you be a bit more specific about what exactly the problem is? One obvious
suggestion has already been made, to turn ICE off. I also find that the preview
is very dark with loss of shadow detail when I scan Scala, and my solution is to
use the analog gain feature to adjust the scanner's exposure to the slide. In
the end I am able to get a good scan, but sometimes after tweaking this setting
2-3 times. I use none of the other image adjustments in Nikonscan, everything
else is done in Photoshop.
