You can use the string and have the hat off your head behind you like the 50's cowboys.
Or there are snaps on the sides for the brims and you can turn the hat 45
degrees if the brim is really in the way.
But mainly the brim just makes for better lens shading.
I may have gotten a brim in one shot over several years.
