I would often let her step on the light switch and see the exposure turn on and off. Then we would put the paper in the developer and watch the image come to life. She knows that she is now allowed to go near the wet bench and touch the chemicals. To me there's nothing like a hard copy and IMO silver halide is the way to archival(ity). One day, an E-bomb might just pop in your vicinity and that's sayonara to all your digital images, palmtop info and circuitry in your N**** and C**** masterpieces. My Leica-M will still go on strong clicking away.
