I can come up with a dozen reasons why a bag makes sense. But you've stated
exactly why I've try to leave them home. When I'm ready to walk out the
door, I always think I'll need more gear than I do. It takes dicipline to
say no. Hauling around more gear doesn't improve my photography. Just the
opposite.   

Speaking of classic stuff, over New Year weekend I shot 10 rolls of film,
nearly every frame with a 50/1.4 M. It's amazing how good that lens is given
the fact it's a relatively ancient design. Very versatile. Stellar performer
for lots of different looks in lots of different lighting. My 35/1.4 ASPH
was in for repair.
