The original Camera Arts was edited by Jim Hughes and was a
fantastic magazine. Very in depth articles (sometimes a three page book
review (of one book) in small print). For those who like good writing with
real content, this was it. Unfortunately it went under in the early 80's.
Probably too much writing for the average reader.
The new resurrected version is quite different. Jim Hughes is now
a columnist and is IMO the best writer on the magazine. Outstanding
reproduction of picturs on thick glossy paper, but the articles leave a
lot to be desired. More like a series of bullets in big print with lots
of blank space.
Stieglitz was once asked why he didn't drop the writing from
CameraWork and just leave the wonderful pictures. He responded that
potential customers would just browse through the pictures and not buy the
magazine. Current editors should take note of this.
