I've been told that linuxPPC is not the best distribution out there..
Yellow Dog is recommended.. but MacOSX is BSD.
Regarding fine woodworking..
Sort of reminds me of my first camera (Ricoh with a Pentax 28MM lens) I
thought it was the best.. until I saw my first Leica. (and nearly cried
when I saw the price tag) 10 years later I bought my first Leica.. and
will never go back to a Ricoh/Pentax...

About four months ago, I installed Linux PPC on a Mac at work because I
needed a code development environment and I cut my teeth on C in UNIX back
when large hairdoos, legwarmers, and spandex were required attaire for the
female portion of the in-crowd. After about one full week of work, I
managed to get it to boot successfully (it no longer does).
The whole experience was like learning fine woodworking by being handed two
acorns.
