don, you must have missed it a couple months back when b.d. drank some bad
bilge water on a tourboat in boston harbor and came back thinking that he
wanted an M5. the reason to get an M5 (because it was cheap) ran out long
ago when collectors realized that there was a (ahem) turd missing on their
shelves. they stopped pilloring it and instead, started trying to grab
them after shunning for a dozen years. stephen has alread been disciplined
for this and is now only allowed to shoot with a QL-17 until march.

for what you're going to spend on an M5, you can get an M6 which, bottom
shooter line, is easier to get fixed when it breaks. (cute two lug and
crazed swing-out metering design aside.)

but now that you've got one, you're, well, stuck. the only way out of this
PIT is to produce some amazing photographs. after such, we shall forgive
you (and some lugger will offer you a bizarre amount of money for your m5,
which you should take, and buy an m6 ttl).

not one to get "snippy", but start cranking out those photos, i've written
your name down in my little book of people to keep an eye on. (hairy
eyeball turns left and right, seeing all.)

we'll quite expect to see some results soon.

p.s. this bilge water is pretty good, i can hear all the colours!

p.p.s. don, if you shoot "family matters" with your leica this weekend,
that's grand, though be forwarned that none of them will count towards
your total. keep them in the family. then find a "project" and start
working on it. acceptable projects include:

  1) my hometown
  2) someone elses hometown
  3) children who __________.
  4) people who ____________.
  5) highway _______________.
  6) things people will do while drunk.
  7) rainbows over the capitols of countries in europe.
  8) flappers and philosopers.
  9) people i meet on the street.
 10) soldiers / witches / daredevils.

homeless people are NOT acceptable unless you live on the street for a
month. also, please do not start photographing cutters unless you want to
do some serious arm wrestling. birds are taken also, i think, as are third
world doctors.

p.p.p.s. you asked about the proper strap for the 3 lug version. for such
a question normally 50 lashes with an OEM iiic leica strap is in order,
but 50 lashes would damage a strap to the extent that it must move from
mint + to only mint so you get off easy. the proper strap for the 3 lug
version is a piece of butchers twine, tied off in a bowline on each end.
barring that, you may use a bit of upholstry cord or twisted piano wire.
