The term "in the field" means not-in-the-centre of the picture field and this is where Lieca usually shines - in the evenness of the quality across the frame. So it does not mean a field test - or the "Field of Gold" by Sting :-) . BTW can you objectively say that the older Leica lenses are better than the newer? All the best!
