Fact: Cameras, cars, airplanes or any other mechanical objects are just that, mechanical. They do not rely on "heart", "love", "dedication" or any other feel good ideas. They rely on SPECIFICATIONS OF MANUFACTURE. These specifications are what determine the final output quality. Indeed these specifications are ALL that Leica or any manufacturer can truly call unique. Given the proper specification of materials, tolerances and continuous checks of those tolerances, hands from any nation can build the highest quality products. Finally it should be noted that today it is the Japanese, not the Germans who enjoy the highest reputation for quality manufacture. This from a nation that 100 years ago had no more "history" of technological innovation than any other feudalistic 19th century bastion of isolationism. Surely those "high quality manufacturing genes" didn't mutate into the entire populace in just 2 generations! Indeed considering the extremely low defect rate of most Japanese products compared to German we should be HAPPY to see Leica move it's manufacture to Japan. (that should get some blood pressures up!) Is it mythical that the German >army, using German built weapons and machinery, far superior to >anything else in Europe, sliced through the Dutch, British, and French >armies like a hot knife through butter not so long ago. Is it mythical >that Mercedes, BMW, Porsche, are among the most sought after autos in >the world? That the reputation of Linhof, Leica, Rollei, Contax, are a >myth?
