There is!

Thin, waxed kitchen paper.

Or the diffuse backing you get in some neg preserver sheets.

Or the diffuse ND gel you can get from lighting supply shops.

Or.... anything that's thin, flat and semi transparent.

I've used all of the above and still do. For ground glass I take the 6x6 out
of my Rolleiflex and use that.
