On the larger bags, the belt helps to stabilize the rig, in combination with the shoulder belt, or it can be adjusted so as to take some of the weight off the shoulder. IME it works well. The system is quite flexible. Some of the smaller bags have only belts, others have belts with removable shoulder straps. Joe Sobel
