My favorite typeface designer, Eric Gill, is often criticized for having lived an immoral life. So much so that there was an uproar in his native England about whether it was right to set the prayer book in Gill Sans. I find myself unable to care about his personal life when I set something in Perpetua or Golden Cockerel. Saying "Henry, your pictures stink" is a fine thing to do. Even if you can't say what stinks about them. Saying "Henry, you are the kind of person who makes stinky pictures" seems to be across the line.
