Subject: [Leica] Glass front pressure plate?!

I was just opening a box of parts that came along with a Leica meter M manual, and I came across a strange frame-and-glass combination. It is a brass frame with screwholes on all four corners. It holds a piece of beveled glass whose small-side dimensions about match a 35mm frame. About 1mm separation from the small-side edges, there appear to be box channels (for sprockets)? The side with the narrow side of the glass is black enamel; the part that looks like it would face the lens is brass.

Is this a front pressure plate for an M3? If so, does anyone know how to install it. My M3 is in the shop, so I can't tell if it will go on.

Does it help sharpness?

Ideas?!

Thanks
