I ran into a bifocal/contact dilemma when I reached the grand old age of 45.
I asked my ophthalmologist what he would recommend so that I could see
through my viewfinder, and still be able to see the close up controls such as
the shutter speed dial & DOF scale. He set me up with monocular vision
contacts.
I put my distance prescription in my dominate eye, (right) and suitable close
up prescription in my left eye. After a few days your brain can make it work
so you can now make the transition between distance and close up happen very
smoothly. On those rare occasions, very dark rooms, where my eyes do not
focus close up, I simply close my right eye.
Most optometrists carry a full selection of contacts, and for the price of an
eye check they will give you a variety of diopters to try, until you are
comfortable.
I really struggled with glasses for years and contacts made looking through
viewfinders so much better. Another advantage to contacts is being able to
easily see the wide angle frames in the Ms.
Unfortunately contacts and monocular vision won't work for everyone, but it's
worth asking your eye professional about. J&J also introduced bifocal
contacts last year. I prefer my monocular set up.
