your suspicions will be confirmed by most repair people I'm sure.
Leaving cameras and lenses in dark environments, especially warm ones, is 
not the way to look after them, as its a breeding ground for mould. Leaving 
lenses or other glass exposed to sunlight (and the UV contained in it) will 
actually kill or inhibit fungus.

BTW, most of the "permanent" hazing and fogging I've seen has been
in UNUSED cameras and lenses, minty condition otherwise, that had
been "closeted" for 30 or 40 perhaps the "excessive"
care that many Leica owners give their gear is actually NOT good
for them?....just a thought!
