I remember being told by a member of the Seattle PD's Red Squad (during an
interlude at a demo in the early 70's) that the reason they used black
cameras to photograph demonstrators was because of a psychological study
funded by the LEAA (the Law Enforcement Assistance Administration, one of
those Nixon-era agencies that doled out huge amounts of cash to police
departments), which concluded that black cameras were less conspicuous than
chrome models.
