Duane, methinks you are overreacting a bit here...

>I would be more concerned whether the M-4 will help her develop
>her vision more at this point or be a stumbling block in her
>current path... Having too many eq choices or learning RF and
>SLR at the same time may confuse things further...

I'd rather give her the benefit of the doubt and assume she's a human being of at least average intelligence, not a parrot... Judging from her photographs, I'm sure she will handle it just fine...

>Second... I'm one who believes that things that are earned are
>much more valuable than ones that are given...

And the reverse can also be true... it's called an "heirloom"... and no, I'm not implying that Tina's leaving us any time soon (sorry Tina)...

>besides that... can she afford the lenses?

From the looks of it, it seems to me that a simple 50/2 will do just fine for her, at least for the time being until she can "earn" her own lenses... for anything else she'll always have her X-700...

>Kids that are given everything tend to be more arrogant and
> spoiled later on in life and tend to expect to be given things
> or certain levels of service etc...

True... correct me if I'm wrong, but Tina only mentioned an M4, I didn't see anything about a BMW, cell phone, etc. but then as you said, Tina would know better than any of us...

Go for it Tina!
