The proper way IMHO is to stand at the subjects position and point the dome towards the camera. If you are able to use a flat disc rather than the round dome, you can possibly do a bit more critical metering, but it is still used to measure the light FALLING ON THE SUBJECT. Can't imagine why anyone would use it the other ways you describe, unless they like incorrect readings. Use the meter a lot. It will teach you a lot about lighting. They all work the same way. Some have more bells and whistles which are usually not terribly important unless you are doing some very exotic kinds of photography. Roger Skully robinsnestphotography.com
