Actually, if you read the Burdick and Lederer book of 1958, the original
character designated the "Ugly American" was quite unlike the commonly
considered American boor of today.  The Ugly one in the book was a fairly
sympathetic figure who just happened to be physically unattractive.

It has been my experience that some Americans in foreign countries treat the
natives like they are the foreigners. Thus the phrase " The Ugly American"

into being.
