Leica advises against it as it can cause damage to the camera. This debate
came up a while ago and I tried it with my M4-2. You hold down the rewind
lever, hold the rewind crank steady and then wind on. All sorts of terrible
noises ensue that sound like the winding gears are trying to mesh but  are
being forced to slip and grind together. I would not recommend it and have
never tried it again.
