In regard to the posts on Xtol, my experience has been the same: Xtol (I
use it 1:1) and Tmax 400 and P3600 gives wonderful negatives, easy to
print, very sharp, very fine grain, doing just what Kodak says.
Agitation consistency is critical. With the typical reel developing tank
it is easy to use too little developer per role of film if you use
dilutions greater than  1:1...
