I guess I agree with everything Jim says about the craft of photography. But I
don't understand why he thinks it is something that must be limited to film.

Pre-visualization is nothing more or less than having an intuitive feel for how
materials will respond to a combination of exposure and, in the case of film,
development. Whether those materials are film and chemicals or a CCD sensor
doesn't seem to me to make a huge amount of difference.

Good craft is good craft. Knowing how to get the most into a negative and the
most out of a print is no different than doing the same with a high resolution
scanning back and an inkjet printer. The results may be qualitatively
different, but getting the most out of your materials and process takes the
same mount of care and dedication no matter what your materials and process
are.

I think it is disingenuous to write off all of digital as point and shoot
nonsense.

What we are really talking about here is the proper use of tools. Saying that
you can't do "real" photography with current digital processes is like saying
you can't write "real" literature using a word processor and a laser printer.

Pete, who programs computers by day, and prints black and white in his darkroom
by night... because its cheaper. :)
