Jim-
I know you think that Uv filters on a Leica are like teats on a boar,
hubcaps on a jeep, or other useless appendages, but I sure wish the pilgrim
who had the Summaron I am selling had had a filter ring on the knurled
front- it would have made the lens mint- instead of exc+ with the two tiny
dinks on the milled edge!
apropos- I have been trying filter for some of my B&W work- the Y2 (K2?) and
the Y1 are good for rendering clouds- especially with the PMK developer.
Someone gave me a 'set' of the Photographer's Formulary PMK concentrate, and
when I finally got up the nerve to use it, I was pleasantly surprised.
The negatives 'look' thin, and are a funny color- even funnier than the
negastives I remember getting from Microdol-X, but when I tried a down and
dirty scan to see what kind of shadow detail I had, I was surprised to find
plenty of shadow detail, and even though I was a tad 'sloppy' on my time- I
didn't start timing until the tank was full, and didn't stop until I started
to pour- that the negatives were not over developed, and that the grain was
as fine as I would have expected from D-76!
Now- being e 'retro' guy, and liking to use the IIIa and IIIf more often
than the M6, I found it quite satisfying to find such good results from an
'old school' developer!
It works marvelous;y with HP5 from Ilford, and I intend to do some Tri-X
this week and see if it is as good!
The rendition of clouds, with a modest yellow filtration, and the PMK is
WONDERFUL! I think I can get that 30's look, where they photographed a girl,
from a low angle, against a cloud filled sky, and the clouds just pop out at
you!
I do use a UV filter, Jim- I admit it, but only on the front of the 1933
Elmar 90 I use for some portraits. I figure that it can't hurt the
resolution that much, not contribute any more flare than the uncoated glass,
and since the from elements are a fragile as the old Summar, I feel more
comfortable putting it in the bag with a Uv filter on the front, even if I
use the FIKUS shade.
I make no apologies!
Anyway- best of unfilter light to YOU, and yours!
Dan ( lemme see, ISO 100, with filter factor 2X to the third power of the
cosine of the angle of the dangle of the neckstrap, times the sine of the
angle of the elbow divided by the length of the filter from the lens's front
surface, and the actual, usable ISO is.......?) Post
