Jan,

The difference in exposure times between 1/100 and 1/125 and between 1/200 and 1/250 is approximently 1/3 of a stop. If your meter is set at 1/125 and your shutter is set at 1/100, you would close the lens down 1/3 stop from what the meter indicates. The same applies in reverse for the 1/40 shutter speed if your meter is set to 1/30. Open up the lens 1/3 stop.

For me it's just become a habit that you can easily acquire with some practice. After awhile it doesn't take much thought, though many consider Leica the thinking person's camera. The point is to make it intuitive.  BTW the old Weston Master exposure meters have all of the old Leica speeds marked on the shutter speed scale.
